About this task

The solution is not hot-pluggable.

Procedure

  1. Power off the server, and remove the server cover.
    CAUTION:
Refer to the server documentation for correct procedure and for safety instructions.
  2. Remove the SmartNICs from the ESD bags.
    CAUTION:
Observe the ESD precautions detailed in ESD Precautions when handling or placing the SmartNIC on a surface.
  3. Insert the SmartNICs in two vacant PCI Express ×16 connector, ensuring that it sits securely within the PCI Express connector.
Note: To optimize cooling, it is recommended that the two SmartNICs are inserted into slots with as much space between them as possible.
  4. Interconnect the two SmartNICs:
    1. Plug the interconnect cable into the expansion connector on both SmartNICs.
    2. Locate the two tiny holes at either side of the expansion connector.
      Page-1 Sheet.1

    3. Install the cable retention clips by pressing each clip onto the PCB, as illustrated.
      Page-1 Sheet.1

The clips will snap into place and lock into the holes on the PCB.

For information on available interconnect cables, see DN-0515 on docs.napatech.com (the Napatech Documentation Portal). See also Expansion connector

Note: Depending on the server, it may be necessary to interconnect the SmartNICs before they are inserted into the PCI Express slots.
Note: The connectors are keyed to ensure correct orientation.
    CAUTION:
To avoid breaking or bending connector pins and to avoid damaging the interconnect cables:
    • Before inserting an interconnect cable connector, take care to align it precisely to the SmartNIC expansion connector.
    • To remove an interconnect cable, always grasp the interconnect cable connector and pull it straight away from the SmartNIC. Never try to remove an interconnect cable by pulling the cable.
    • Observe a minimum bend radius of 0.25 inch (6 mm). The interconnect cables are constructed from micro coaxial cables that can be permanently damaged by sharp bends.
  5. Interconnect the two SmartNICs by attaching the time synchronization cable to the internal time synchronization connectors on both SmartNICs (see Connect Internal Cables for Time Synchronization ).
  6. If the PCIe slot does not support 75 W, connect the optional auxiliary power connectors to an additional power supply outlet (see Optional Auxiliary Power Connector).
  7. Secure the SmartNICs at the rear end of the server by fastening it at the top of the I/O bracket using the retention mechanism provided in the server, if applicable.
  8. Depending on the SmartNIC configuration, plug in the appropriate pluggable modules:
    • NT100A01-SCC to run at 4 × 25/10 Gbit/s: Plug in the desired SFP28 or SFP+ modules.
    • NT100A01-SCC to run at 4 × 10/1 Gbit/s: Plug in the desired SFP+ or SFP modules.

See Plug In a Pluggable Module for more detailed instructions.

  9. Connect network devices via a fiber optic cable to the SmartNICs as desired.
  10. Replace the server cover, and power on.
  11. Install the driver for the SmartNICs.
For information on installing a Napatech driver, see:
  12. Configure the time synchronization connectors (see DN-0985).
  13. Use the diagnostics tool to verify that the interconnect cable has been correctly installed.

Results

The NT100A01-NEBS interconnect solution is now ready to operate.
