Napatech Software Suite: ntservice ini file

The configuration file for the Napatech Software Suite is a human readable text file.

It is used to configure all the adapters in the system.
For each adapter it is possible to configure a number of parameters, such as:

  • AdapterType
  • BusId
  • RX and TX host buffers including number, size and NUMA node
  • Time synchronization parameters

Besides the adapter configuration there are a number of global configuration parameters, such as:
  • Time stamp format
  • Logging
    Auto generated ini-file
If the ini-file is not found, it is auto generated, The auto generated ini-file will contain keys with default values for all installed adapters. Each key/value pair is appended with a comment showing the possible values for the key and the default value is marked with a '*'.
In order to get an auto generated ini-file for all adapters, the existing ini-file must be deleted or renamed and the driver must be stopped and started again. Afterwards the ini-file can be edited to fit the users needs.

    Note
A setting depends on a certain adapter to be supported. Not all adapters support all settings.
In the tables below the supported adapters for each setting can be seen in the "Supported Adapters" column. But a setting can also be dependent of the FPGA version. This means that even though the adapter is supporting a setting according to the description, the setting can be unsupported and rejected by the adapter, if the adapter is equipped with an older FPGA.

    System settings
[System] - This section contains system-wide settings

    Adapter settings
The adapter settings can be specified in two ways. Either as a specific adapter section like [Adapter0] or like an adapter type section like [NT40E3_4_PTP]. An adapter section is specific for a certain adapter while an adapter type section covers all adapters of the specified type. If the same setting is specified both in the adapter section and the adapter type section, the value specified in the adapter section is used.

    [AdapterX] - Adapter specific settings
This section contains settings for a particular adapter, identified by the BusId. You must have an AdapterType and a BusId setting in this section. If you, however, have only one adapter, the BusId setting can be omitted, which will allow the adapter to be moved around. The adapter will be given the logical number X. If no sections named like this is found (eg. if the ini file is empty), all adapters in the system will be configured.

    [NTxxEyy] - Adapter type setting
If a setting is not found in the [AdapterX] section it will be looked for in a section named after the AdapterType of the given adapter - eg. [NT40E3_4_PTP]. You can use these sections to configure all adapters of the same kind in just one place. Valid adapter type names are the values used in the AdapterType setting.

    Logging settings
[Logging] - This section contains logging settings

    BusId NNNN:NN:NN.N 0000:00:00.0

The PCI bus ID. Adapters are uniquely identified using the bus ID. If domain is omitted, 0000 is assumed. BDF format mirrors lspci.

    Note
If only one adapter is present, the bus ID is ignored.
    All adapters
    are supported
    Adapter
CancelTxOnCloseMask See ini-file help for information about possible values 0

The port mask value is a bit mask: bit 0 = port 0, bit 1 = port 1 etc. Furthermore, each bit represents the adapter local port, not the virtual port. When transmit streams are closed the Tx-port adapters CancelTxOnCloseMask is checked and if the port-bit is set, all pending transmit data will be canceled and transmission of data will stop immediately. If not set, normal behavior will occur and all packets, not yet transmitted will be transmitted, even after closedown of the transmit stream.

    Note
Not all adapters support this feature, in which case
the driver will return an error.

Adapters that support FEC (Forward Error Correction) will normally enable FEC if this is required by the NIM (Network Interface Module) that has been plugged in.
E.g. for an NT100E3: If a CFP4-LR4 module is plugged in then FEC will be disabled, while it will be enabled by default for a CFP4-SR4 module.
It is possible however to disable FEC in this situation by setting DisableFec = true. In the opposite situation however it is not possible to enable FEC, if a LR4 module has been plugged in.

    Note
Some early versions of NT100E3 does not support FEC, and if an SR4 module,
which normally requires FEC, is plugged in, the module will be stated as not
supported. By setting DisableFec = true then the SR4 module will be accepted but
    running without FEC.
If only one key value is stated this will apply to all ports on the adapter but
it is also possible to state a comma separated list of values - one for each port.
In this case the number of values must match the number of ports.

A high scanner load percentage will make this detection more precise but will also give lower packet processing capacity.

    Note
The percentage is given as a decimal number, e.g. 0.01 for 1%%,

    Adapter
    HostBufferHandlerAffinity -2 .. 15 -2

The adapter host buffer handler thread affinity can be set with this parameter.
-2 is default and sets the affinity to match the adapter number.
-1 disables affinity and lets the host buffer handlers run on all CPUs
as dictated by the system scheduler.
0..max pins the host buffer handler to that specific CPU.

    Host buffer poll interval.
This parameter is in usec. It controls how often ntservice should poll for new data in the host buffers. Changing this option affects latency; a higher value increases latency but lowers the CPU utilization in ntservice to service the host buffers.

    Note
Should be changed with care as a wrong setting can result in packet loss.

default The HostBufferSegmentAlignmentRxsetting should only be used with non-dynamic HostBufferSegmentSize setting. In this situation the beginning of segments in hostbuffer memory is aligned with the value of the HostBufferSegmentAlignmentRx setting. This can be useful in situations where segments are written directly to disk using DMA/Direct I/O which requires the buffers to appear aligned in host memory. Currently "default" and "none" maps to 0. Which makes sense in that HostBufferSegmentSizeRx defaults to "dynamic" - and in that mode HostBufferSegmentAlignmentRx is not applicable. NT20E3-2-PTP (4GA)

    default

    Host buffer Rx segment size.
This parameter is in MB. It controls the segment size of the RX host buffer(s). Changing this option affects how much data each segment within the host buffer can hold before it is released to the user.
Currently default is equal to setting value dynamic - meaning that the RX host buffer segment size is dynamic.

    Note
Adapters running NT3GA FPGAs - the RX host buffer sizes specified via
HostBuffersRx must be at least 16*HostBufferSegmentSizeRx.

Adapters running NT4GA FPGAs - which have been configured to use static
host buffer segment size - is only able to utilize half of the maximum available
host buffers - typically 64 host buffers.

    Host buffer Tx segment size.
This parameter is in MB. It controls the segment size of the TX host buffer(s).
Changing this option affects how much data each segment within the host buffer can hold before it is released to the adapter.

    Note
Should be changed with care. The TX host buffer sizes specified via HostBuffersTx
    must be at least 16*HostBufferSegmentSizeTx.

    Host buffer segment timeout.
This parameter is in usec. It controls how often the FPGA releases segments that are not full. Changing this option affects latency; a higher value increases latency but lowers the CPU utilization in ntservice to service the segments.

    Note
Should be changed with care as a wrong setting can result in packet loss.

    HostBuffersRx [x1, x2, x3], ... [4,16,-1]

This parameter controls the RX host buffers per adapter. Host buffers are defined using "[a, b, c]" where:

a : The amount of host buffers with size=b and NUMA=c
b : The size of the host buffer in MB. It must be a multiple of 4 and >= 16
c : The NUMA node on which the host buffers should be allocated

HostBufferRx can specify multiple host buffer definitions using CSV, e.g., HostBufferRx=[1,16,0],[1,16,1], which defines one 16MB host buffer on NUMA node 0 and one 16MB host buffer on NUMA node 1.

To disable a host buffer, set the amount (parameter "a") to 0 (zero). To get one hostbuffer per port, set the amount (parameter "a") to "$NumPorts$". -1 in parameter c means take the value from the NumaNode parameter.

    Note
The driver supports a total max of 1024 GB host buffer memory (across all adapters).
A total number of 256 hostbuffers is supported per adapter running with NT4GA FPGA.
For adapters running with NT4GA FPGAs the maximum available host buffers is
    dependant on the HostBufferSegmentSizeRx setting.
A total number of 32 hostbuffers is supported per adapter running with NT3GA FPGA.

KmTcamConfig [cnt, len, dualLookup], ... [2,4,0],[4,1,0]

This parameter controls the configuration of the key store TCAM used by the IP match feature. It is defined using "[c, l, d]" where:

c : The the number of banks used for lookup of keys with size l
    l : The key length. Ipv4 has length 1 and IPv6 has length 4
d : Should dual lookup be supported. 0: no, 1: yes

Dual lookup means that you can look up both source and destination addresses in one filter (IPMatch == SrcIP,DstIp).
The c parameter is ignored, but kept for backwards compatibility.

    Default is no dual lookup.

    Note
A configuration must be specified for both IPv4 and IPv6 and
you must specify the same value for dual lookup for both key sizes.
    For some high-speed adapters (e.g. NT200) enabling dual-lookup
will also cut the CAM capacity in half.

This parameter controls the configuration of link state propagation port pairs. A link state propagation port pair is defined using [portA, portB].

While at least one of the links are down: If port A link state is down, the laser is turned off on port B and vice versa.
Link down propagation is only active in one direction at a time.

NumWorkerThreads 1 .. 1000 32 NTService splits inter-process communication (IPC) between worker threads.
Each stream has an IPC connection to NTService, but the connection is only utilized when the stream exchanges information with NTService via NTAPI.
All streams, except for the network stream, exchange information with NTService via IPC, but since these streams are not in the data path, they are rarely used, which is why the default number of worker threads is low. However, the pool of worker threads is a shared resource, and if a high number of applications use IPC concurrently and extensively, increase the number of worker threads to ensure applications do not block each other.

Even This parameter controls the on-board SDRAM memory split among all host buffers.
When set to Proportional, the SDRAM on-board memory is split in the same proportional relation as each host buffer size relates to the total host buffer memory allocated. Example: [1,512,0],[2,64,0] => split in 80/10/10 percent.
When set to Dynamic, the SDRAM on-board memory is allocated dynamically to the host buffers that need it. One host buffer could potentially end up taking all SDRAM.

PortDisableMask See ini-file help for information about possible values 0

Specifies the status of the port at startup. The disabled port must then be enabled manually, either by using the config tool or by using the config stream. The value is a bit mask: bit 0 = port 0, bit 1 = port 1, etc.

    Note
Not all adapters support disabling of ports. Disabling a port on an
adapter that does not support it results in an error. Only the bits
covering a port is checked. For example, the value 0xFF disables
all ports, no error is returned.

A comma separated list that specifies the initial speed for each port on an adapter that supports more than one speed. The first, leftmost value addresses local port 0 and so on.

    Note
Not all adapters support this setting and specifying it for such an adapter
results in an error. A port that does not support multi rate ignores the
setting. In general it will be the module that has been plugged into a port
that determines, if it supports multi rate or not.

    None

Specifies the intended usage of an adapter. Not all adapters support a profile other than the default. If None is used, the profile defaults to the native profile of the adapter, e.g., Inline for inline and Capture for capture, etc.

    Note
This setting is deprecated for all adapters with 4th generation FPGA's and
    has no effect.

    PtpDelayAsymmetry -999000000 .. 999000000 0

PTP path delay asymmetry compensation. Specified in nanoseconds.
This compensation must be positive when the propagation time master-to-slave is longer than the propagation time slave-to-master.

    Note
If path asymmetry is experienced in the network and this parameter must
be used, it is important to note that other parameter settings may influence
the delay asymmetry. It is especially parameters like the Delay Mechanism
(E2E vs P2P). Others, like the sync rate relation to the delay-request rate
may also have a large influence.

    PtpDelrMinInterval -7 .. 6 0

PTP Delay request min interval in units of log2 seconds. When running in PTP master mode, this parameter specifies the minimum delay-request interval to send to PTP slaves. When running in PTP slave mode, this value is the initial value used before receiving an update from master. When running unicast transmission with a master, this parameter is used for the delay-request unicast transmission request.

    Note
This parameter is only used with the E2E delay mechanism.

SdramFillLevelWarning X1, X2, X3, X4 0 The format is XX[,[YY][,[ZZ][,[UU]]]], where XX is the lowest and UU is the highest level. A level is an integer in the range 0 through 100 that expresses how big a percentage of a host buffer is in use.
The system supports up to four fill levels: XX, YY, ZZ, and UU.
A level pertains to the size of the SDRAM allocated to each host buffer.
For example, if the level is set to 50 for an adapter with one gigabyte of memory and four host buffers using equal SDRAM split, then if any of the four host buffers uses more than 128 megabytes (equal split = 256MB/host buffer) of memory, the system generates an event for that specific host buffer.
Note that when at least one fill level is defined, the system generates events when the fill level changes to either 0 (empty) or 100 (full) even though those two values are not explicitly listed in the ini-file, and it is not necessary to define, nor is it possible to disable, those two events.
A level equal to zero disables that level and any subsequent level.
Typing a comma without a value denotes a value of zero, e.g., '20,,' denotes '20,0,0', which defines a single warning level at 20 percent.
Leaving out a value is generally a bad idea, for instance ',,20' denotes '0,0,20', which disables all events.

    SDRAM Split

    Note
Determines the split of SDRAM between the host buffer system and the FlowTable.
Valid settings contains "Buffer" and "FlowTable".
"Buffer" must have a minimum of 12.5%% of allocated SDRAM.
"FlowTable" must have a minimum of 6.25%% of allocated SDRAM.

    SOF

    Time Stamp Injection Offset Mode.
This setting pertains to transmission of packets (TX).
The setting is used for controlling the offset base used when injecting time stamps into transmitted packets.
The offset base can be either start of frame (SOF) or end of frame (EOF).
Note that this setting defines the offset base, while the offset itself is part of an extended header.
Mode SOF is start of frame, and is the original mode of Napatech adapters. Mode EOF denotes end of frame.

    Note
Not all adapters support EOF time stamp inject mode, in which case the
    driver will return an error.

    EOF : All supported adapters
EOF SOF = Start of Frame. EOF = End of Frame.
    Reception of packets (RX):
Packets can be time-stamped when the first octet is received (SOF) or when the last octet is received (EOF). Default is when the last octet is received.

    Transmission of packets (TX):
The setting is used for controlling the value of the time stamp that the adapter inserts into transmitted packets. The timestamp can either be the time when the first byte of the packet is put on the wire (SOF) or the time when the last byte of the packet is put on the wire (EOF).
If Timestamp method "SOF" is choosen all ports must run the same speed.
    All adapters
    are supported
    System
    TimeSyncClockAdjustmentMode 1
    2
    1

Time synchronization clock adjustment mode. In clock adjustment mode 1, the clock change rate may be set as high as 100,000 ppm whereas in clock adjustment mode 2 the clock change rate has a maximum of 2000 ppm.

    Note
PTP capable adapters will have default value of 2.
PTP time synchronization must use clock adjustment mode 2. PTP capable
adapters may use clock adjustment mode 1, but PTP is then not available.
Non-PTP capable adapters may only use clock adjustment mode 1 (mode 1 is
    merely for backward compatibility).

    FreeRun

This parameter specifies the frequency reference priority. The priority decreases from left to right.
When a reference fails, the next reference in the list is used.

    Note
When one or more failovers have occurred, the driver periodically attempts
to get back to the highest or a higher priority.

    TimeSyncHardReset DISABLE
    ENABLE
    ENABLE

Enable or disable the allowance of hard resetting the time stamp clock to the reference clock when synchronizing to another clock (time jump vs sliding).

    Note
When this parameter is disable, i.e. no time jumps allowed, first time jump
    after driver load is allowed.
When running PTP slave and the time offset between slave and master is greater
than 39 hours, a hard reset will occur caused by PTP protocol limitation.

The setting denotes the adapter whose clock is used to synchronize the system time, i.e., the operating system's clock. Only one adapter can serve as time source. The default behavior is not to synchronize the system time.
For example, to use adapter zero's clock to synchronize the system time:
    [System]
    TimeSyncOsTimeReference = adapter-0
Avoid other means to synchronize the system time, for instance NTP, when enabling this feature.

    Note
It is illegal to configure a cyclic dependency, which occurs if
the host clock is synchronized with an adapter and that adapter's clock
is synchronized with the host's clock. The driver detects this and
issues an error. The following configuration is illegal:
    [System]
    TimeSyncOsTimeReference = adapter-0
    [Adapter0]
    TimeSyncReferencePriority = OsTime

    OSTime  : All supported adapters
    FreeRun

This parameter specifies the priority of the reference clocks to use as synchronization clocks. The priority decreases from left to right.
When a reference fails, the next clock reference in the list is used.

    Note
When one or more failovers have occurred, the driver periodically
attempts to get back to the highest or a higher priority.
    All adapters
    are supported
    Adapter
    TimeSyncTimeJumpThreshold 0 .. 3600 1

When using PPS time synchronization, this parameter determines the number of seconds the adapter clock may be offset from the selected reference clock before a time jump is performed.
When using OS time synchronization, this parameter is interpreted as an on/off time jump setting where time jumps are allowed when TimeSyncTimeJumpThreshold is not equal to 0. When set to 0, no time jumps are allowed (sliding). The hard-coded threshold used is 1 second.
When using NT time synchronization, this parameter is interpreted as an on/off time jump setting where time jumps are allowed when TimeSyncTimeJumpThreshold is not equal to 0. When set to 0, no time jumps are allowed (sliding).

    Note
To enable time sliding regardless of clock reference,
    set this parameter to 0.
This parameter is only applicable when TimeSyncClockAdjustmentMode=1.
    All adapters
    are supported
    Adapter
TimeSyncTimeOffset 0 .. 1000000 0 Only applies to NT and PPS time synchronization. Sets the time synchronization signal delay compensation. Specified in nanoseconds. All adapters
    are supported
    Adapter
    TxTiming ABSOLUTE
    RELATIVE
    RELATIVE

An adapter is either in relative or absolute timing mode. When in relative timing mode, an adapter transmits packets such that the inter-frame gap (IFG) between pairs of packets is correct. When in absolute timing mode, the adapter transmits packets at the time stipulated by the time stamp in the packet descriptor. When in relative timing mode, the IFG is most accurate but the (absolute) transmission time of a packet may be slightly off over time; whereas in absolute timing mode, the transmission time of a packet is most accurate over time but the IFG (between pairs of packets) may be slightly off.
The default behavior is to run each adapter in relative timing mode.

    Note
In relative timing mode the max inter-frame gap is set to 2.6 sec.
Not all adapters support absolute timing mode, in which case
the driver will return an error.

    DISABLE

Enable WIS/OC-192c mode on WIS supported adapters.
Wis mode is enabled for all ports on the adapter.

    Note
Not all adapters support WIS mode. Enabling WisMode on an adapter
without Wis support will return an error.

WisModeMask See ini-file help for information about possible values 255

Specifies the wismode status of the port at startup. The value is a bit mask: bit 0 = port 0, bit 1 = port 1, etc.

    Note
Requires that WisMode is enabled. The default value is 0xFF meaning that
wismode is enabled on all ports. Only the bits covering a port is checked.
For example, the value 0xFF enables all ports, no error is returned.
Enabling WisMode on an adapter without Wis support will return an error.
