Optical and electrical options are available for the breakout solutions. The optical option can be implemented for single-mode fiber applications or multimode fiber applications. The correct type of pluggable modules and breakout cables must be selected for your target application.

Installing NT200A02 and upgrading the FPGA image

Install a Napatech NT200A02-SCC or NT200A02-NEBS SmartNIC as described in DN-1169 or DN-1200, respectively.

Pluggable modules and breakout cables

This table shows pluggable modules and breakout cables that can be used for single-mode fiber applications and multimode fiber applications.

Single-mode fiber application Multimode fiber application
Optical pluggable module 8 × 10 Gbit/s or 4 × 10 Gbit/s QSFP+ 40GBASE-PSM4 QSFP+ 40GBASE-SR4
4 × 25 Gbit/s QSFP28 100GBASE-PSM4 QSFP28 100GBASE-SR4
Optical breakout cable (MPO to LC)

Two pluggable modules must be plugged into 2 ports of the NT200A02 SmartNIC to run at 8 × 10 Gbit/s. One pluggable module must be plugged into port 0 of the NT200A02 SmartNIC to run at 4 × 25/10 Gbit/s. Port 0 is the furthermost port from the PCIe interface as shown in the following figure.

Page-1 Sheet.1 Port 0 Port 0 Sheet.2 Sheet.4 Port 1 Port 1 Sheet.5 Sheet.6

For the electrical solution the QSFP+ module and the cable is combined in a QSFP+ 40GBASE-CR4 to SFP+ 10GBASE-CR direct-attach copper (DAC) breakout cable. And the QSFP28 module and the cable is combined in a QSFP28 100GBASE-CR4 to SFP28 25GBASE-CR DAC breakout cable. DAC breakout cables are multiple copper twinax cables which the pluggable modules are included as shown in this figure.

For information on available optical breakout cables, see DN-0515 or Miscellaneous-Accessories as well as Pluggable module and breakout cable selection guide.

Verifying the link status

You can verify the link status of ports using the monitoring tool.
Note: The monitoring tool is included in the Napatech Link-Capture™ Software package. For more information about how to install the Napatech Link-Capture™ Software package, see Install the Napatech Link-Capture™ Software Package in DN-1340.
To start the monitoring tool, run:
/opt/napatech3/bin/monitoring
